When Emily* got a text from her boss urging her to get vaccinated, she was surprised only by his reasoning. The owner at her casual café gig wanted all of his staff vaccinated so he didn’t have to ‘bother’ about staff getting tested and isolating after going to an exposure site. 

‘Getting vaccinated doesn’t mean you can’t get Covid,’ she said, ‘I don’t know if he doesn’t know that, or he just doesn’t care. He’s taken staff off the roster for getting tested and having to isolate before.’

It is extremely challenging to look in the mirror and confront the reality of your privilege; the fact that where and when you were born, the material circumstances of your parents, the colour of your skin, your gender, your body, your sexuality, and even dumb luck – all played some role in the success you enjoy. Particularly if you are wealthy or successful, it is comforting to believe in the inherent justice of the universe and meritocracy because in a meritocracy, not only do you deserve your wealth and happiness, but others with less also to some degree deserve their unhappiness.

A short-term strategy for a long-term issue, where is the support for apprentices?

The Federal Budget’s plan to subsidise the wages of apprentices and trainees over the next 12 months will no doubt provide ample hi-vis photo opportunities for Government Ministers. But it’s a short-term strategy to a problem that requires long-term action, and it doesn’t solve the issues that apprentices have faced from dodgy employers long before the pandemic.
